The 2018 Kia Rio Wins Top Safety Pick Award

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety releases its top safety picks for vehicles of all sizes each year. This year, the 2018 Kia Rio Sedan was awarded the highest honor of Top Safety Pick Plus (TSP+) in the minicars category. It is the first car to ever get this award in the minicar category! Your Kia dealers in Rochester couldn’t be more excited about the award. We love the Rio and recommend it to many of our customers.

The award goes to the 2018 Kia Sedan, and specifically those made after June of 2018 which include optional Autonomous Emergency Braking and LED headlights. The other two picks in the minicar category are the 2019 Hyundai Accent and the 2019 Mini Cooper. However, these vehicles only received the Top Safety Pick (TSP) award, not the TSP+. So how did we swing it? The Kia Rio has lots of cutting edge technology to keep the drivers safe. This includes:

·       Active & adaptive safety features to sense and react to your driving conditions. Such as:

o   Anti-lock Braking System

o   Electronic Stability Control

o   Hill-Start Assist Control

·       Advanced airbags that including a dual front, side, and side curtain placements. These include sensors that front seat passengers and the appropriate level of impact.

·       Pretensioners for the seatbelts which keep the passenger in the safest position possible in a crash.

Other Kia vehicles to receive awards were:

·       The 2018 Kia Forte in the Small Cars category with a TSP+ rating

·       The 2018 Kia Niro Hybrid in the Small Cars category with a TSP+ rating

·       The 2018 Kia Soul in the Small Car category with a TSP+ rating

·       The 2018-2019 Kia Optima in the Midsize Cars category with a TSP+ rating

·       The 2018 Kia Cadenza in the Large Cars category with a TSP rating

·       The 2018 Kia Sportage in the Small SUVs category with a TSP rating

·       The 2019 Kia Sorento in the Midsize SUVs category with a TSP+ rating

·       The 2018 Kia Sorento in the Midsize SUVs category with a TSP rating

·       The 2018 Kia Sedona in the Minivans category with a TSP rating

After receiving the award, Orth Hedrick, the executive director of Car Product and Telematics at Kia Motors America, stated:

“The Rio may have a small footprint, but it’s a big performer in all other areas, including driving dynamics, style, features, and now safety accolades. Being the first automaker to establish a TSP+ in the minicar segment is further proof that Kia is dedicated to improving the quality and integrity of our world-class model line.”

So what does it mean to be a Top Safety Pick Plus vehicle? There are two main aspects to the test. First, they test crashworthiness. In other words, they test how protected riders are in a crash. Then, they test crash avoidance and mitigation. This test analyzes how well the vehicle and its technology helps drivers avoid crashes or decrease the severity. To be a TSP+ vehicle, you must have good ratings for the following tests:

·       Headlights

·       Passenger-Side Small Overlap Front

·       Head Restraint

·       Roof Strength

·       Driver-Side Small Overlap Front

·       Moderate Overlap Front

·       Side
